Public Service Announcement for Brain Workshops by Ann Renker PhD

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT            Please run NOW THROUGH JULY 29

Two different workshops on Brain Development --  CHILD BRAIN (August 7) and TEENAGE BRAIN  (August 8) –will come to Port Angeles sponsored by Prevention Works!

Ann Renker, PhD (Anthropology, American University, 1987)  is a transplanted New Yorker, who for 35 years in Neah Bay, WA dedicated herself to the transformation of the Cape Flattery School District.  In 10 short years Ann’s diligent leadership and knowledge moved Neah Bay Schools from among the lowest 5% in the state to a top tier award-winning school district with dramatic rates of high school graduation and successful outcomes.  Because of her amazing effect on student learning, Ann now works at the Office of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction where the State hopes she can have that same transformative influence on other small struggling schools across Washington.

On August 7, Dr. Renker will explain how modern science answers critical questions about how babies and small children learn about the world and interactions with others.  She will include how trauma-informed strategies help young children achieve success despite contemporary challenges.

On August 8, Dr. Renker will explain what is happening in the brain during the adolescent years that often makes interacting with teenagers puzzling for many adults.  Dr. Renker will reveal how the brain develops during adolescence as well as how it is impacted by trauma.  She will emphasize how trauma- and cognitive-science informed strategies can be used to help very young children and teenagers and families navigate important contemporary social challenges.

Both workshops will be 9 AM – 2 PM at the PA Library, with lunch provided.  Save yourself travel costs and time by attending this outstanding professional development opportunity!   Register for both days for $85 or either one for $50.  Clock hours (Teachers), Stars Credits (Childcare providers) and Continuing Ed Units are being arranged.   More information and registration at  www.pw4kids.org or call 360 461 0893.   Prevention Works! is a community coalition that works towards positive childhoods for all children in Clallam County.
