This FREE training, sponsored by the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe and presented by Outcomes and Operations, LLC, will cover the entire spectrum of violence prevention and intervention.  The training will be held: 

Wednesday and Thursday, May 30-31, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm

Elwha Heritage Center, 401 E. 1st St, Port Angeles

ISO: Volunteer Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician

First Step Family Support Services in Port Angeles is seeking a Volunteer to assist parents with fitting car seats.  The volunteer will become a Nationally Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician and:

  • Learn the technical skills and knowledge to correctly use and install car seats, booster seats, and seat belts.
  • Educate parents and caregivers on how to properly select, use and install car seats and booster seats, and to know when to transition children to seat belts once booster seats are outgrown.
  • Put your knowledge and hard work to use teaching parents and caregivers how to properly protect their children in a motor vehicles and provide "hands-on" assistance to properly use and install car seats, booster seats, and seat belts.

This position has a flexible schedule (4 hours/month, by appointment) and requires completion of a certification course.  If you are at least 18 years old and interested in becoming a Nationally Certified Passenger Safety Technician, please call Andrea or Jacki at 360-457-8355 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. First Teacher Playground Playgroup

First Teacher is hosting a playground playgroup this spring!  Come gather with other parents for outdoor play and connecting, play with other families of young children, and finish with an activity.  This will be held outside no matter the weather.  Each child that attends receives a FREE book.  All are welcome!

The playgroup will meet every Thursday, 9:00 am - 10:00 am from May 3rd - June 14th at the 0-5 Community School Playground in Sequim.  Enter through the gate on the 3rd St.

Free Community Event: Kevin Hines

Peninsula Behavioral Health is briniging Kevin Hines to Port Angeles for a free community presenation on Friday, May 11, 3:30-4:30 at Civic Field.  Kevin Hines is a dynamic speaker who will be talking about mental health and suicide. He is one of less than 1% of people to survive a fall from the Golden Gate Bridge.  “In the 17 years since his nearly fatal try, Kevin has become the bridge between the many parents, siblings, children, spouses, and friends left behind and their loved ones who did what they did to put an end to unimaginable suffering.”   See the EVENT FLYER for more information.

First Step Family Support Center, Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe and the OESD are hosting a Community Café Host Training on Friday, May 18 in Sequim.  A Community Café is a community conversation hosted by parents with the support of community partners. Café conversations spark leadership and develop relationships to help strengthen families. Child care will be provided, and registration is free. STAR credit and Clock hours are available. NEAR Science Training Registration

Registration for our NEAR Science (Neuroscience, Epigenetics, ACEs, & Resilience) training is open!  Topics to be covered include: going beyond Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), understanding the impact of neuroscience and epigenetics on children’s development, and how to use the NEAR at Home Toolkit to talk with parents about trauma and resilience.  Our presenter is Marian Birch, DMH, a retired clinical psychologist, Senior Fellow of Zero to Three, and the former Clinical Coordinator of the Certificate Program in Infant Mental Health at the University of Washington School of Nursing.

Suicide Prevention and Awareness Training

Suicide Awareness for Everyone (SAFE) is a 2-hour presentation based on the nationally recognized QPR “Gatekeeper” training. QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer. The QPR processes emphasizes that both professionals and non-professionals can effectively intervene to prevent suicides.  Registration is required and space is limited. Section 8 Waiting List Opportunity Applications Available April 6

The Peninsula Housing Authority (PHA) will be opening its Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher waiting list for Clallam and Jefferson counties for one week beginning Monday, April 9, 2018 - Friday, April 13, 2018.  Applications may be picked up at the Housing Authority office located at 2603 S. Francis, Port Angeles WA 98362 between the hours of 9:00 am – 4:00 pm (9:00 am to 12:00 pm Friday) and at Olympic Community Action (OlyCAP) located at 823 Commerce Loop, Port Townsend WA 98368 beginning April 6, 2018 or you may call (360) 452-7631 Ext *810 to request an application be mailed to you.  You may also download an application from the web at www.peninsulapha.org

 Complete applications will be accepted BY MAIL ONLY and must be mailed to 2603 South Francis Street, Port Angeles WA 98362 – ONLY THOSE POSTMARKED BETWEEN MONDAY, APRIL 9, 2018 AND FRIDAY, APRIL 13 2018 WILL BE ACCEPTED. The PHA will conduct a random lottery of all COMPLETE applications received within the required time frame to fill 175 positions on the Clallam County Section 8 waiting list and 100 positions on the Jefferson County Section 8 waiting list – individuals may apply for one or both waiting lists.  Income limits apply.

Hope, Help, and Strength Town Hall

The Stevens Middle School Prevention Club is hosting this town hall meeting at Lincoln Center on Thursday, March 29, 6:00 -8:0 pm, to create solutions that make it easier for people to be healthy in their own communities.  The focus of this event will be to provide an opportunity for community partners to have a conversation about the overlapping issues of Mental Health, Substance Use (including alcohol, marijuana, and other drug use), and Suicide Prevention. The recent suicide death of a former classmate sparked the SMS Prevention Club to create a strategic plan regarding negative stress.
